“Chasing the light” is what a group of local artists discussed during a plein air workshop held this past Saturday, Aug.27, in Warsaw along the riverfront. Painting enthusiasts Jane Roskamp, Jane Shank, Dorinda Meyer, and instructor and local artist Jamie Green gathered at the A-frame home of Linda Asher and Terry Weeks where they sat on the veranda overlooking the mighty Mississippi River to share stories, accomplishments, event gatherings, techniques, and so much more — learning from each other about various aspects of what they each do to create their masterpieces done outdoors, sharing recent works and experiences.

The opportunity to gather, learn, and then paint outdoors in all temperatures and weather from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. also included a break for lunch before each set out along the riverfront seeking an inspirational landscape or subject to paint as part of the Workshop.

True artists at work, this is not a paint-by-numbers nor is it a paint and sip, but rather a real opportunity for local artists to meet, share their works, and discuss their passions for painting.

These painters, who have developed their talents and eye for their subjects over the course of many years, are doing the real thing with a variety of mediums they have learned to master including acrylic, oil, watercolor and even pastels. With each making a personal investment in quality supplies and painting tools — easels, palettes, brushes, canvases — all the things that are necessary for them to create their masterpieces, these painters are nothing short of modern-day gallery artists.

But do not let that dissuade those who may be just starting out. Roskamp, who organized the event in Warsaw, said the group wanted to bring the opportunity to Warsaw because “there are many local artists here and the area offers incredible views and subject matter.”

Each involved in the group at various levels in their own developments said that their skill sets continuously develop with the workshops they attend through the plein air affiliation as well as just getting out there and doing it. ntegral to the process is using tools correctly — like the view finder grids — and keeping the painting process pure — by learning how to paint effectively — “chasing the light” as its shadows move across their canvases and being mindful of the element of time. While some artists do use photographs to be able to master the shifting light, keeping the process “pure” to its artform, Green said “involves learning how to “chase the light” that is present” as one paints without the use of a photograph and that this is what being a Plein Air painter is all about.

The cost to attend the workshop was $50 and artists bring their own supplies. Roskamp said that the group would “love to do it again and have more local people join [them].” For more information about plein air painting, go to Sandpiper Plein Air painting on Facebook.
